THE NORTHERN IRELAND MELANOMA STRATEGY IMPLEMENTATION GROUP (NIMSIG)The Northern Ireland Melanoma Stategy Implementation Group was announced at the stategy launch in 1998 and held its first meeting on 15 September 1998.This multi-agency implementation group was set up in-order to take forward and implement the Department of Health and Social Services "Strategy for the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Malignant Melanoma and Other Skin Cancers in Northern Ireland" (Melanoma Strategy).
AIMSTo reduce the number of cases and deaths from malignant melanoma and other skin cancers in Northern Ireland by facilitating the implementation of the Department of Health and Social Services Melanoma Strategy and providing a focus for action.
OBJECTIVES1. To increase awareness about care in the sun especially to those at increased risk.2. To encourage early detection of skin cancers by raising awareness among the public and professionals. 3. To encourage treatment according to the agreed guidelines. 4. To network, sharing information on models of good practice while facilitating multi-agency co-operation on care in the sun initiatives. 5. To facilitate co-ordination of awareness raising activities and so reduce duplication while maximising the use of resources. 6. To lobby for environmental change, for example, provision of shade, availability of cheaper sunscreens, use of protective clothing. 7. To encourage policy development and implementation in a range of organisations and settings. 8. To identify areas for research and audit and encourage evaluation of materials and activities. 9.
