Research indicates that people who have sunburn and /or intense sun (UV radiation) exposure in childhood are at an increased risk of developing skin cancer in later life.

Schools are an excellent place to teach behaviours that can prevent over exposure to UV radiation. The following points show areas of opportunity and action:

Time in school - UV exposure during the years at school is a major contribution to total lifetime sun exposure. Sun creams are rated according to their ability to stop UV light. Here is a practical experiment that can investigate which cream is best at stopping UV light getting to the Skin?

Fashion trends and peer pressure – school children are especially susceptible to the suggestion that a ‘suntan’ is healthy.

A learning environment – to practice new skills including care in the sun.

Influencing knowledge, attitude and behaviour to care in the sun - this is a major role played by teachers and can contribute to the long-term health of their students.

Cost-effective – school lead interventions can result in decreased costs to the health service and can strengthen the economy.
